Selma, Alabama

Lowndes County, Alabama, is so gorgeous the emerald poplar trees drip with liquid gold at sunset. It is also so poor that resident's sewage is flushed directly into the front lawn. Hard to imagine such extreme poverty inside the world's wealthiest nation.

But this strange hothouse of beauty and disenchantment also produces exotic flowers, and heroes like Perman Hardy, an African American American activist who has dedicated her life to harassing her community into voting for a better life. Her service to the county, and her activism, is a stellar example for the three beautiful grandsons she is raising on her ancestral ranch. CJ, astride his favorite Alice and framed in gold against the southern sun is the hope that Perman Hardy has invested in for the future of Alabama and the USA.
